Setting to connect MyCloud Home locally only

Setting up your My Cloud Home device for local-only access can improve privacy and reduce reliance on external internet services. While My Cloud Home devices by default are designed to work through cloud-based access, you can still configure your network and usage habits to prioritize local connectivity.

First, connect your My Cloud Home device directly to your router using an Ethernet cable and power it on. Ensure your computer or mobile device is connected to the same local network (Wi-Fi or LAN). This is essential because local access works only when both devices are on the same network.

Next, assign a static IP address to your My Cloud Home device through your router settings. Log in to your router’s admin panel, locate the DHCP reservation or connected devices section, and bind the device’s MAC address to a fixed IP. This ensures consistent local access without needing to rediscover the device each time.

Although My Cloud Home relies on cloud authentication, you can still access files locally using network protocols. Enable SMB (Server Message Block) access if available. On a Windows PC, open File Explorer and type  in the address bar. On macOS, use Finder and select “Connect to Server,” then enter smb. This allows direct file transfers over your local network.

To limit cloud dependency, avoid using remote access features in the My Cloud Home app. Instead, perform file management tasks only while connected to your home network. You may also block the device’s internet access through your router firewall settings, though this can disable certain features or initial authentication requirements.

Another important step is ensuring your firmware is updated before restricting internet access. Updates often require cloud connectivity, so complete them in advance. Afterward, you can safely minimize external communication.

Keep in mind that My Cloud Home does not officially support a fully offline mode, so some features like user authentication and mobile app integration may not function without internet access. However, for basic file storage and local transfers, the above setup works effectively.

In conclusion, while My Cloud Home is cloud-centric by design, configuring your router, assigning a static IP, and using SMB access can help you achieve a mostly local-only experience. This setup enhances control over your data while maintaining convenient access within your home network.
